View Full Version : Should Centreon 2 be compatible with Nagios 2?

While we were developing Centreon 2, we came across some problems... we've been trying to keep the compatibility with Nagios 2 so far, but it has become a problem now that kind of hinders our progress.

Nagios 3 is so much more powerful and optimized with its new possible features (NDO, multi-templates, on-demand macros etc...), wouldn't be pointless to keep the compatibility with Nagios 2?

Plus, Centreon 2's stable version would be released sooner if we don't take care of the compatibility...

Please vote, should we keep Centreon 2 compatible with Nagios 2... or not?

I see no reason why not to drop Nagio-2.x; best to keep up with the latest & greatest technology.

since some common versions of linux don't have a nagios 3 package yet it would require installation to be completed by individuals with a stronger skill set. I am not to worried about this but I would prefer the forum isn't filled with questions concerning compiling nagios and ndo. Nagios 3 is what I am using and it really was pretty easy to setup but I do remember when I was first getting my feet wet that compiling the app and finding dependencies was a little more challenging than what I was used to. That being said the quickstart guide for nagios 3 is pretty easy to follow.

if Centreon 1.x support fully Nagios 2.x and it's enough stable there is no reason to be compatible. Those want to use Nagios 2.x use Centreon 1.x, and those want to use Nagios 3.x use Centreon 2.x ...

It's my two cents ;)

I think isn't a good idea...

witch distrib support nagios 3 actually ?

I prefer use a package (for security update, support.....) and I would like to use Centreon2.

Others example. I have 2 nagios, (1 in v1, 1 in v2)... how to migrate my architecture if centreon2 only support nagios3 ?

Upgrade all my system in nagios3 ? without support packages ?

Witch distrib support nagios 3 actually ? Madriva, Fedora et opensuse... and debian in backports...

And for your nagios 1, it will stay in centreon 1.4...

The migration of nagios 2 to nagios 3 is very easy...

For us (Developer Team) keeping centreon 2 compatibility will slow centreon 2 development.

Or, it's possible to support Nagios 2 since 2 release ?

Centreon 2.0 --> 2.2: Nagios 2 support
Centreon 2.3 : Nagios 2 not support.

Just a time to migrate with Centreon 2.x arch.

What can't people install both version 1 & 2 on the same box and just rename the folder ?

I know that Centreon is not going through a major rewrite but since it is tied to Nagios, why not up the version to 3 to match Nagios's version. Thus version Centreon 2 will work with Nagios 2 and Centreon 3 will work with Nagios 3.

Support bug fixes to v2 for 6 months but don't worry about adding features etc to the old version, only the new one.

Just a thought:D

Vous pouvez supprimer mon vote car finalement je migrerai nagios an meme temps que Centreon donc la compatibilité je m'en moque.

Par contre la possibilité de conserver les data de la base perfparse vers celle de ndo m'intéresse beaucoup plus ;)

just for example:

debian etch (stable) : nagios2
debian lenny (testing) : nagios3
ubuntu hardy (stable) : nagios2
fedora 8 (old-stable) : nagios2.6
fedora 9 (stable) : nagios2.11
opensuse 11 (stable) : nagios3
opensuse 10.3 (old-stable) : nagios2
CentOS : nagios2 (not sure)
SLES10 SP2 (stable) : nagios 2

I think is not a good idea do not support nagios2 because all stable distrib only support nagios2 in package.

I prefer use package because when I buy professional support... Is so easy to open a ticket on supported package.

I also prefer for upgrade security. Is so easy to upgrade by rpm/dpkg.

.... When stable distrib support nagios, I think centreon2 does support nagios2.
