Is there, or are there any plans for automatic discovery of network objects, with the program adding specific services based on SNMP data? This is specifically needed for larger environments to avoid unnecessary human intervention.

There are several projects that are able to convert nmap output into nagios config for instance http://nagioswiki.com/wiki/index.php/Autocreating_Nagios_Configuration_with_Nmap_and_Nm ap2Nagios.pl

I doubt that any of these work with Nagios3 though...?

From what I have read, you just need to adjust the data fields such as contact group and service, etc.
